Grimsby - A Great Place to be When most people think of Grimsby, they think of its famous fishing industry. But today Grimsby is much more than the thriving fishing port it once was. It's a colourful and vibrant town packed with things to see and do, surrounded by beautiful countryside and within easy reach of miles of award-winning sandy beaches. 2008/9 is an exciting time to be a student in Grimsby. As the 'capital' of North-East Lincolnshire, it's undergoing extensive urban regeneration with smart new housing, shops and amenities. Grimsby is also a rapidly expanding centre for commerce and industry, confirmed by its coveted title: Europe's Food Town. Grimsby has carved an exciting new identity based around its proud heritage. One of the most memorable historical landmarks is the magnificent 309-foot Dock Tower responsible for welcoming generations of trawler men back to the docks. And you can still buy some of the most wonderful fish you will ever taste from family-run businesses around the quayside. Grimsby really does offer you a mix of heritage, modern commerce, amenities and location that no other town in Britain can offer. Shoppers will love the Freshney Place Shopping Centre - the largest shopping mall in Lincolnshire - where you'll find over one hundred high street names, boutiques and high fashion shops under one roof. Or why not browse round the delightful Victorian Abbeygate Arcade with its colourful array of designer clothing, jewellery and crafts? The nearby seaside town of Cleethorpes is also famous for its splendid Victorian shops. And if you love a good market, Cleethorpes' Wonderland is home to one of the biggest indoor markets in the area. Cooks will find no shortage of places to buy diverse and interesting local, continental and global produce. As well as mouth watering delicatessens and well-stocked supermarkets, gourmets will also appreciate the Friday Farmers’ Market in Grimsby where you can buy anything from ostrich meat and fresh fruit and veg to locally made preserves, wines, breads and cakes. Superb Food, Drink & Nightlife Eating out in Grimsby and nearby Cleethorpes doesn't have to be expensive. You'll find dozens of popular bistros and restaurants offering a full array of global cuisine at reasonable prices. Of course dining out on the coast wouldn't be complete without good old British fish and chips - and you can treat yourself to some of the world's finest at Steels Corner House and the Ocean Fish Bar in Cleethorpes. Pub-goers enjoy a lively mix of pubs and bars offering a wide range of different food and drink. Real ale enthusiasts should be sure to check out Willy's Wine Bar in Cleethorpes - it brews its own beer. Down at Grimsby's Riverhead Development you'll find five top-class venues under one roof, so you can quite literally drop in for a snack at lunchtime and party till late. Local clubs cater for an eclectic range of music tastes with clubbers queuing to dance to everything from RnB to Indie. There's also a pulsating mix of music at the area's premier nightclub on Cleethorpes' Victorian pier. Live music fans are well catered for too. Cleethorpes is famous for its touring tribute bands and its annual jazz festival. The Grimsby Auditorium attracts top named artists and stage shows with everything from ballet to opera, rock and pop, comedy and classics.
